Hello, I am Kara. I have been interested in Wicca for a while now. I have been doing a lot of research and reading books, but they all seem to be saying different things about it. How do I know which is the truth? Could someone please explain what Wiccans have to do, and what it is exactly?

Merry Meet Kara! Its always nice to meet other people who are on their own journey, no matter how new or old it may be(the journey not the person). I know that when I first started on the path of Wicca, I was confused and frustrated, just like you seem to be. No matter how many books I read, or articles on the internet, or what kind of research I did, nothing ever seemed CLEAR! The thing about Wicca is that there isnt a rulebook, no one is going to tell you how to do something, no one is going to set you in what many perceive to be the "right direction". I mean let's face it, we are humans, with brains(most of us), which means that we all have different thought and ideas and emotions. Not all of us believe that President Obama is doing so hot, of course not all of us believe that he royally sucks either. Wicca is a bit like a roadmap, and the things you read are like asking for directions. Lets say Im taking a trip to California but I get lost along the way, so natrually, I ask for directions. Bob might tell me one way, Bill might tell me another, Sue might tell me a different direction and Jill might tell me yet another completely different one! Confusing yes? Not to say that they are the wrong directions, all those directions could lead me straight to California... but which directions to take? Unfortunately, there is no clear cut direction. I am originally from the Christian religion. We had a bible to give us rules, the pastor to give us rules, the commandments(which were more like laws), and so on and so on. The thing about Christianity is that you always have a roadmap with the path clearly marked. Pastor Jack gives you the directions to get to 'California', clearly written, maybe even highlighted. You have a path spelled out for you, your expected to take it, and it is well known as the 'right' path. There is no "truth" to Wicca, all those books that you read and the people who write them, the things they are telling you ARE their truth. To them, it's what works, it is tangible in their religious views so who are we to call them untruthful? I challenge you to come up with your own truth Kara. You just have to keep reading and keep searching. Decide what you agree with and why, what your comfortable with and what your not so comfortable with. Thats just the way Wicca is. Now, Im not going to give you a long, dry, boring deifinition of Wicca. I am going to give you my personal definition of Wicca. Remember, this is strictly MY definition, I do not speak on behalf of every Wiccan. To me Wicca is not just a religion it is a lifestyle. Its the wind in the trees, the butterlies, the deer, your neighbor and even your enemies. Wicca is a breath of fresh air, it is independent and it is beautiful. Why shouldnt humans find beauty throughout the world and see the good througout life? Wicca is the stars and the moon, the seasons and the changes in a woman as well as in a man. The goddess is everywhere! I know that this could be very frustrating for you to read because there are no clear answers on where you should turn or what you should do and Im sorry for that. I hope that this might have helped you a little bit though and I hope that I can answer any questions you may have. Blessed be! Timmy

Im glad that I could help There isnt neccesarily anything you HAVE to do, Wicca is all about being yourself and being comfortable with whatever works for you, as long as you follow the Rede of course. I know alot of the books that Ive read or alot of sites that I have looked at said that after researching and learning all that you can(traditionally studies last a year and a day) That you should do a dedication ritual or a self-initiation if you are serious about commiting to Wicca. That doesnt mean the you have to jump on the bandwagon right away and cast your circle. Only after lots of study and self searching should you fully commit yourself to being a Wiccan. It can be as simple as meditating on what you learned and in your heart KNOWING that you are a wiccan and saying some simple words like "From this day forward I will dedicate myself to the God and Goddess and follow the Rede" Or it can be super grand, its all up to you. I would suggest that you read up on wicca as much as possible and decide whether it clicks with you or what you agree with. You would be suprised how many people think that Wicca is right for them and do this great dedication circle and end up realizing that this isnt the right path for them at all. So Read Read, and Read some more! Only then should you consider doing a dedication ritual. It is an important decision and one you shouldnt take lightly. Wicca is a lifestyle, not something that you do one or two days a week and then pick up the rest of your life and move on. It is something that you should focus on your whole life so be sure that you are ready to commit to that. Hope this was helpful Blessed be! Timmy
