Smudge sticks are usually made from sage herbs, often tied together with string. Traditionally one would let the stick smolder and the smoke would cleans areas/people/objects/ect. I have seen them at new age shops for expensive prices - never pay more tham two dollars for one that's as long as the width of your hand.
They are so simple to make, here's how:
Harvest sage leaves from yoru garden or herb/spice shop. You can buy them at normal grocery stores but make sure the sage leaves are WHOLE, not crushed or ground. Other herbs that may be of use are rosemary and bay leaf, for protection.
Place the herbs on a cookie sheet and place in the oven at about 200 degrees F. Turn on the oven light and watch them - it only takes a few minutes, but each batch is different (they can burn fast).
Remove the tray just before the herbs look totally dry. By the time it takes you to get them out, they will have toasted a bit more. They will likely continue to bake on the hot pan even once removed.
Wrap the herbs in a bunch and wrap with string. Usually colours red, white, and black are used but you may improvise. Make the herb stick longer than it is wide, and tie tightly.
When ready to cleanse, light the top of the sage stick and let it smolder. Traditionally you would let the smudge stick sit in a shell, but any fireproof surface works. | |
