The divine Spirit is presentin all creatures and things: people, animals, plants, stones... Theultimate creative force manifests in both feminine and masculine modes;therefore it is often symbolized as the Goddess and The God. Insome covens, both are celebrated equally. In others, The Goddess is givenprecedence or even celebrated without reference to the God. AllGoddesses and Gods are aspects of The Goddess and The God. The aspects mostpopular in Wicca are the Triple Goddess of the Moon (Maiden, Mother and Crone)and the Horned God of death and rebirth. Reincarnationand karma are valid concepts. Upon death one goes to a state of rest andreflection, and eventually chooses where and when s/he will be reborn. Magickis practiced for positive (helping) purposes: spiritual development, healing, guidance, safety, etc. Ritualsare generally performed outdoors when possible, at the New and Full Moons, andat eight Sabbat festivals which mark the progression of the seasons. Magickand celebration are performed in small groups, usually 3 to 13, called covens. These are basically autonomous - there is no central church authority orhierarchy. Thereis no holy book, or prophet, no equivalent of the Bible or Jesus or Mohammed.Individuals have access to the divine, and do not require an intermediary.Every initiate is regarded as a priest/ess. Thecentral ethic is "And ye harm none, do as ye will." Whatever energyyou send out returns threefold, so it is wise to be kind to others. Weshould live in harmony with the Earth and Nature, and not exploit them. ThoughWicca is a valid spiritual path, it is not the only one. There is norecruiting, and people should be free to choose the path that best fits theirneeds.

I feel I must point out, there ARE traditions where the God is given more emphasis than the Goddess, not in a terribly sexist way but just for those who feel they have lost contact with the God in all this modern-feminism movement. There are also types of Dianic Wicca where thr Goddess is given more emphasis than the God, but he is still aknowledged as her "beloved consort".
I personally don't like Dianic femenist Wicca, it often excludes men and, oddly, is almost homophobic - they often exclude anyoen who is not a natural born woman, this includes trangenders and tran sexuals who may have a very strong connection to the goddess, and yet they are excluded because (a) they are not physcially a woman, and are only psychologically considered female, or (b) they went through surgeries and therapies and because they had to fight to be female, thus they are some how beneath us. It's ridiculous. On that note, there are many open and tolerant Dianic covens that I do support, but it saddens me that they are few in number. | |
