Making your own Potpourri's

What is Potpourri?

Potpourri is a smattering of different botanicals that are pleasing to the eye, as well as to the nose. Potpourri can be made with magickal intent or without.

You can easily make your own potpourri with herbs and flowers, as well as other botanicals that you come across.

Here are a few tips for creating potpourri with magickal intent:

-First, decide what the intent will be, happiness, love, passion, calming, etc.

-Using your List of correspondences, decide which color will be the focal point of the potpourri. You could use yellow or orange for happiness, pink for love, red for passion, and light blue for a calming effect, or whichever colors you associate with these attributes.

-The most difficult part of making potpourri is finding the herbs and flowers that you correspond with the magickal intent and are the color that you have chosen as the focal point, but don’t let that deter you as looking for them is a learning experience that you may enjoy more than you expect in the beginning.

-You can also use the flowers of herbs that are pruned during the growing season, so don’t throw those in the compost heap just yet. Hang them to dry, and store them in a nice clean jar with a tight fitting lid until you want to use them.

-Choose an essential oil that suits the scent and magickal intent of the potpourri. This isn’t necessary, but it will add to the fragrance of the potpourri.

-You will need a fixative to bind the scent and make it last longer. There are many available commercially, Orris Root is popular, but some have an allergic reaction to it. If you are fortunate to have this herb in your garden, you could dry the root, and grind it to a powder. Another is Rosemary. This is what I use as it is readily available, and I do not have a reaction to this herb. You could also use patchouli leaves, or Sage leaves as a fixative. These last few will not hold the scent as long as Orris Root, but will hold it longer than without using a fixative at all.

-When you have gathered all of your ingredients, combine them (except for the fixative) in a glass bowl with the magickal intent firmly fixed in your mind. This is a good way to ‘transfer’ what you are trying to achieve to the potpourri.

-Stir in about a teaspoon of Rosemary for every 3 cups (24 oz) of potpourri, with the magickal intent still fixed in your mind.

-Place the potpourri in a glass container with a tight fitting lid for a few days, shaking it once or twice, so that the scents have time to mingle and set in.

-Once this is done, you are ready to display your potpourri, and enjoy the intent that you have infused it with.

Have fun!
