Victoria Moondance, it's much more helpful to us if we know what kind of problem you are experiencing, and I'm sure you'll get more help by simply asking us here.

Perhaps, if your totem is very unusual, it may not be a totem at all. It may be a spirit guide of astral being here to help you.

So then, what problems are you experiencing or what questions do you have?

Familiars can range in species, there are no set ones. I knew a friend who for about 4 years had a giant millipede, might seem weird to some but it worked for her. What is yours?

Mine is a shark, a lemon shark to be exact. I am not sure if it is a spirit guide or familar/totem animal. In the dream i got when i asked to be shown information about my spirit guide/whatever, it at first frightened me, and then it swam right underneath my hand, showing me it meant no harm. Later, when i woke up, i realised the significance of this gesture. i also know little about how to use/interact with my familiar/guide. Prehaps meditation?

Well, for familiare spirit guides or totem animals, the first step is to research. Now that you know the specicies of the shark, research, and see what any scientifical evidence means it might stand for. Using the facts you have, learn what the animal means to you (each animal has something to teach).

Second, as you have guessed, meditate. You mentioned in another thread your "dreamworld". Go there, because it is your safe place for journeying, (and should be the starting and ending point for pathworking) and try a pathworking to get to know your animal. If not, you may just speak with him/her and figure out how they interect.

Perhaps you will find your shark suits a purpose well. It may be a dream messenger of sorts, or it may be there to protect you in your journeys, or it could be a wise council of sorts.

i finnaly found a refrence in a book, and it said sharks represent relentless feriocity and intuition. Should i do research on the type of shark for more specific charicteristics, do you think?

I think so. Saying that sharks stand for those things seems kind of cheap to me.

For example, one of my guides is a rabbit. A reference book told me that rabits meant being fearful. That wasn't much help, and it was a very small part of what my guide actually came to mean.

I suggest you do a lot of scientific research on sharks. Then see what those facts mean to you.

For example, an arctic hare changes colours depending on the season. For my guide, this means they are in tune with the earth and open to change with their environment - both things I need to work on. A reference book probably wouldn't tell me those things, but a quick google and some puzzle solving wiorks wonders.
