Divination - Pendulums

Section 1: About

Pendulums are basically any small object suspended from a thread or chain, which moves to indicate future possibilities, the truth, outcomes, ect. Many of them are store bought, crystals or glass points hung from a chain. However, you can also use a ring hanging from a piece of thread if you choose. You may choose to carve your own out of wood, or to buy a shaped crystal and attach it to a chain. When buying a pendulum, it is usually best to find one of an even or symmetrical shape, with a point in the center, just to make sure that you don’t get false readings due to the physics of its movement. Buy the one that resonates with you, not the cheapest or prettiest. As you should for most of your magical objects, try to cleanse and charge them. Allow them to sit in the sun or moonlight, or a dish of salt. Meditate with it, and try to build a psychic link between you and your pendulum.

Once you have developed a link with your pendulum, it should be relatively neutral to location. While each person’s pendulum is different, in general you can use them almost anywhere as long as you are focused. As with many divination items, you should treat your pendulum as if it is a conscious being. Ask it nicely for things, and thank it for its effort. With all magical items, the effort that you put into them is equivalent to the help that you receive. If you show no respect for your divination items, they will not be as accurate as someone who takes good care of them.

Section 2 - Use

Generally speaking, a pendulum can be used to indicate possible answers to “yes” or “no” questions, the degree of the possibility, to sense the power of an object, or to indicate if power is rising or receding in an area. For example, when I hold my pendulum over an empty place on my desk, it remains still. However, when I hold it over my tarot cards, it begins to spin clockwise, as the deck has some power. If I hold it over a candle, it may spin, but not as much, as it holds less power. You can also ask it questions like “Will I finish my task by tomorrow?” and so on. Typically, a yes is indicated by the pendulum swinging back and forth, and a no is indicated by swinging side to side. For some, however, clockwise turning in a circle indicated a yes, and counter clockwise indicates a no. Be aware that when you ask it several questions, that it may take time for your pendulum to change positions. Let’s say I ask it a question and the pendulum swings back and forth to indicate “yes”, then I ask it a question and maybe it simply starts to rotate into a sideways swing to indicate a “no”. In this case, I should allow time for my pendulum to change positions. Some pendulums may return to a circular swing before giving the next answer. Each pendulum is different, some swing in circular patterns, to some the width of the swing is important. Do not try to force your pendulum to show you yes by swinging one way, let it communicate to you the way it naturally chooses.

A good way to develop understanding between you and your pendulum is before each session, ask it to show you a “yes”, “no”, and “neutral” position. Then ask it if it is willing to communicate the honest answers to the best of its ability. If the pendulum indicated a “yes”, then proceed. If it does not, meditate with it or cleanse it again (plus consider rewording the question or focusing more), and if it still remains unresponsive then thank it, and put it away for another time.

As I said before, each pendulum is different.

Some are better for asking certain questions than others. For example, I have two pendulums. One I can ask practical questions, but the other seems only to tell me what I want to hear. After several weeks of trying to ‘fix’ my second pendulum, I decided it can be beneficial to have one that tells you what it is you really want, and thus I’ve decided to go with the flow, and it has proved worth having it the way it is.

To practice with your pendulum, one approach is to try asking it questions you already know the answer to. This can be good, but at the same time there is the possibility that you are purposely moving it without taking notice. One method I like is to ask it a question you don’t know the answer to, but can find the answer to quickly. For example, at a time when you do not know the exact hour, trying asking the pendulum “Is it currently between ____ and ____am/pm?” if the pendulum says no, move onto a different time slot. If the pendulum says yes, try to narrow it down to see if it can indicate the time anywhere within 15 minutes of the actual time. Record your answers on a piece of paper and then go check the clock. If your pendulum said it was between the hours of 2-3pm when it was, then good job. But if it was 2:15 and your pendulum predicted it was between 2:30 to 2:45, then do a little more work, but know you are off to a very good start. Try asking it various questions of several types each day and record your readings. Then the next day, record the outcome. After a week or so, see what kind of questions your pendulum responds to most accurately.

As has been said, your pendulum may respond better to certain types of questions. You can never really tell what your pendulum will like until you try it. However, it will develop as you use it. You cannot completely dictate how your pendulum acts, but you can generally do different excercises to encourage certain ‘attunements’ if you will.

For example, when asking questions about the truth, let your pendulum swing in some incense smoke first, or perhaps keep it by a feather. For emotional or personal questions (having to do with relationships) dip your pendulum in ritual water or keep near seashells. You get the idea. You can also keep it with certain herbs or crystals.

On that note, also pay attention to what your pendulum is made of. Most pendulums out on the market are made of crystals. Take notice of whether or not your pendulum responds well to certain questions because it is one of the typical properties of that crystal. For example, I had an old amethyst pendulum that was [perfect for revealing the meanings of dreams and in finding the truth. My rose quartz works best for relationships and finding out what I want. My hematite one is best for mundane, everyday questions. What your pendulum is made of is not a hard-fast rule of what your pendulum is good for, but it may help you.

To prepare your pendulum for use, cleanse and charge it as best for you. If it is your first time using a pendulum, you may want to prepare the space you are using to be sure you are accurate the first few times you use it.

Eliminate all distractions. Physical and mental. Relax. Focus on your questions. You will probably also want to turn of radios or electronic objects, as the EM fields may skew your results. Try not to sit cross legged or to cross your arms, as this may also interfere with your aura if the pendulum picks it up as being ‘tangled’. These are not concrete rules, however, perhaps you have no choice but to use your pendulum in a crowded place, or maybe it’s more comfortable to sit cross legged. Do what works best for you and your pendulum.

Section 3 -The science behind how they work

There are three basic scientific theories as to why pendulums work. These are as follows, however the reasons here are parts of very complex studies and thus I will not go into fine detail.

Theory #1

The “hologram Theory” many of you may have heard of the idea that any part of a whole contains within it the whole itself. For example, the DNA in your hair is the exact same DNA code in your lips. This theory is the same, for holograms, any part of the image is composed of the same image, and this is also true in fractal geometry . The way this theory works is that it assumes the pendulum can pick up on the “smaller” details, and magnify then to show us the answer to our questions, which are part of the “whole”.

Theory #2

The “radar theory” this is simple. As the name suggests, pendulums can act as a radar for certain organic materials. They can sense the frequencies of water, minerals, stones, ect… and they can send this signal to you. The best example I have ever heard of this is like a bat using radar to navigate in the dark: The signal that is first sent out is you communicating with the pendulum, then the pendulum sends back a signal based off of the surroundings.

Theory #3

Electro Magnetic Fields. For those of you who do not know, electric magnetic fields are around everything, living, dead, or objects that never could be alive. They are easier to sense in plants, even more so in animals and humans. They emit energy, thus they can be picked up by some forms of equipment. In the world of occult knowledge, magic, Wicca, divination (and so on) we call these auras. Pendulums, having their own EM field, can pick up on the EM fields of other things. For some reason, the EM field of a pendulum is particularly reactive, especially when used by another person.

So I'm wondering...

I think this info is great Chi - as I try to "prod" my hubby to improve his skills. I get this feeling that he is afraid of it...not unsure of it...I think he knows how powerful it is and that is what concerns him, so he keeps it at bay. I will be relaying this information to him and possibly try to get him to work with one.
