There are more then one here, by request I'll starty with Ruby.

Ruby

Colour: Red or burgondy

Element: Usually fire, but can sometimes be associated with Water.

Energy: Projective

Astrological signs: Cancer or Capricorn

Ruling Planet: Mars

Properties:  Stimulates joy and combats depression. When used in a manner that relates to the astrological sign or cancer, it focuses on creative spirit. It is well known for regenerating the physical and spiritual heart, both in terms of medically improving the circulatory system and with emotional disfunction. This form of Corundum encourages one to follow their bliss, promoting creativity and the ability to expand beyond oneself. All other forms of Corundum are saphires, thus the two are in the same family. It is a "stone of nobility". It strengthens immunity and helps to empower the individual. Being ruled by mars it is excellent for protection. It resonates best with the heart chakra and vibrates to numbers 1 and 4.

Moonstone

Color: White, cream, or pinkish orange with a blue shine

Element: Water

Energy: Receptive

Properties: Moonstone is sacred to goddesses of the moon, and has had a lunar connection for many centuries. It is a very good stone for women of all ages to own. It is a stone of love, sleep, divination, youth, psychism, and protection. It is generally protective of women and is said to ease menstrual difficulties and childbirth. It aids in developing intuition, releasing tension, self-expression, and creativity. Moonstone fosters nurturing and mothering qualities by promoting selflessness and unconditional love. A moonstone placed under the pillow can help to bring peaceful sleep. Moonstone is said to be good to maintain a youthful appearance and as an aid in weight loss. Moonstone is a very passionate and personal stone. It is a reflection of the person who owns it. It does not add or detract, only shows how it is. This is why the moonstone is said to perceive that which "is". Moonstone is an excellent stone to use in meditation to understand oneself. Placing it in the moonlight of a moon reaching its fullness, not a full or waning moon, can revitalize it. It is said to bring inspiration to the wearer and some say that the best time to use it is during a full moon, as the stone will then reach it's most powerful stage.

History & Use: The people of India believe that by holding a moonstone in the mouth, one can foretell the future. Wiccan ritual jewelry is often made of silver and moonstone, and a stone is frequently kept with tarot cards or rune stones to promote psychic power.

How do they 'work'?

The same way all crystals work.

You cleanse them, charge them, and empower them, then you can experience the benefits by wearing them as jewlery, placing them under your pillow to sleep, meditating with them, keeping them with your divination items, healing with them, and so on.

It's up to you. I combine all three methods, at once, actually.

First I let them sit in sea salt, then in ritual water (depending on the stone - some dissolve!), then I pass them through incense smoke and let them sit in the ashes, then pass them through candle flame and let them sitin the oil I used to annoint the candle. The entire process takes about 24 hours.

Then I let them sit on my windowcil in the moonlight, and finally I place it under my pillow for a night, and after I wake up the next morning, I put it in it's place with the other crystals I have. Or, if I decide not to sleep with it under my pillow, I usually do an empowering meditation with it.
