Many of the members of this forum are teens or pre-teens, and having a real athame is rare (and often not legal) for people under 18. There are alternatives, such as a wooden one, but if your parents object to that or you cannot get one there are other things you can use. Many people just use their wand, or use their finger. I wanted to see what alternatives the members on here have come up with.

"Wicca is life, its the dappled green light filtering through the leaves of an ancient forest, its the sunlight glistening on snowcapped mountains, its the fiery reds of autum, and the slumbering snails under the snows of winter. Wicca is in everything, we just need to open our eyes"

Well, I chose for the "athame" to represent air for me, rather then fire. Thus, my suggestions and solutions become:

Feathers, particularly a feather scultped out of clay my mom gave me last Yule.

My hand, specifically my dominant hand (which is the right hand for me) for projecting, and my non-dominant (left) hand for sensing energy or sometimes to dispell.

Wood, Bone, or stone carvings are common, particulrly on shammanistic or native paths. If you can't use a wood/bone/mineral knife, try just finding a carving with a pointed or flat edge.

Letter openers are popular for many, and they are very decorative. Pocket knives are also used

Sterling silver or steel butter knives, or cake cutters. Endless possibilities. My family has so much fancy dishware sitting around that a dull but decorative knife has always suited me well.

Aslo, depending on what element you want your athame to represent (usually fire or air), you might try finding a crystal that suits your purposes, and possibly finding one shaped with a pointed edge.

For things like circle casting to drawing a symbol in the air, I usually just trace the circle with incense smoke and draw symbols in the air with incense. Or candle flames, but I've had too may incidents with dropping hot wax on myself.
