I thought I'd share a few of the traditions I still like to keep going, a lot of them are protective, but not all. First there is having a broom above your door. Obviously having a full sized traditional broom above every door is not exactly practical, but if you make your own mini ones from one thick stick with small thin sticks or straw tied at one end with raffia, then you can make some quite cool little decorations and fulfil that tradition at the same time. Its said that hanging a broom above the door (either the front door, bedroom door or every door) will mean evil cannot cross the threshold. Place a small mirror facing outwards in the window. This ones quite easy really, negative energy and any spells sent against you hit the mirror and are reflected back to the source with three times the original power. Sort of a jump start on the threefold law. Hagstones are stones normally found at the river or beach with one or more holes all the worn naturally all the way through them. They are very protective, and many people like to carry or wear one, but hanging on somewhere in a room (normally on a doorframe) or hanging on over your front door will pass these protective properties on. In the old days these were often used to repel witches, but the tradition dates back further than that. Corn dollies represent the wisdom of those who come before us, and when made each Autumn and placed in the house (or carried) they help to pass the wisdom on to the new generation, as well as keep the traditions of our ancestors going. Conkers placed around the house will help to repel spiders. "Witch Balls" are simply small globes hung or placed in the room where you do most of your workings to increase their power and to absorb negative energies that might interfere with them. Normally they are glass, but many people use plain silver baubles or clear quartz balls. Hanging herbs from beams, the undersides of shelves or the ceiling to dry has been done for hundreds of years, they fill the room with their lovely scents, pass on some of their properties while there (for instance sage would help keep the room pure and cleansed) and of course can be put into jars for future use once dry.

Another Tradition: Autumns Watchers As the trees begin to shed their leaves many beautiful shapes and colours are available, along with nuts, berries and various types of moss and bark. Gather these to make colourful masks and faces to decorate the home and draw the spirits of the woods to watch over you and all who live within. These are beautiful tributes to the spirits of nature, and each is unique.
I'll be posting about this in the blog this week, so you can get more details there.

I really love brooms! I have one over the door in my bedroom, also, a mini broom under your pillow brings pleasant dreams and protects you.
